How to prevent famine in the future

As we all make donations and involve ourselves in ways to help those affected by the famine, it is also important to discuss what could be done to prevent famines in the future. An article by Katy Migiro brings forth ideas that could be crucial in alleviating famine. It is clear that poor rains, high food prices and conflict are the main drivers of hunger and Katy places emphasis on the following four topics that could maybe solve these issues if properly implemented:
  1. Get the private sector to adopt new research
  2. Eat different foods
  3. Invest in livestock and agriculture
  4. Use irrigation to support pastoralism, not switch to farming
As she states "We can prevent it from happening again if we are willing to embrace the research and policies that give farmers in the region the tools that they need to be resilient in the face of increasing uncertainty."
